Gehenna

Gehenna called me down
to her fiery pits
gehennaWhere the refuse of imagination
Lies in unexamined lives.
Jerusalem, my desolation
No Nehemiah’s walls gird your waist,
The armor of a thousand thousand warriors
Are barracked in your belly.
The lover who between your thighs
Left you enemy’s sons
Whose spears multiplied
And testified to your slaughter.
Your daughters you sent out as gifts
To pacify their bloodlust
To sedate them by their licentious wiles.
Where are the soldiers now?
Who with honeyed words
And whispered consolations
You drew near.
Your allies cannot heed your calls
from the deafness of their graves.
