Obscure Units

But for an ell,
But for a farthing,
But for some other other obscure
Deutoronomic scale,
in the howling past we are all drawn up
and quartered and considered lacking.
There are golden ages of delight
and silver ages of slight decline
copper and tin and tungsten
but all melt and infuse and
are blended fundamentally from hydrogen.
These obscure units,
how we see the light, how we measure
finger’s touching – the language of conquest
the labors of love, all changing,
how Plato played us for fools!
