Donkey Harley

If I’m gonna give it up
Led Zeppelin rolling blues, honking harmonica
feels like wheels rolling, whistles blowing
If I’m gonna give it up
seems like I should be hitting the road
watching lines pass, wind on my face
on some modernist Grail quest
Kerouac whispering in my ear
mud flap tapping out the beat
going down to some dry town
some old abandoned bar with cobwebs
and spiders and scorpions for waiters.

Who says that Jacob found an answer
wrestling with an insomniac angel
stars overhead, rock for a pillow,
rebel patriarch, bad boy with his donkey Harley
Who says he found an answer climbing ladders
his Medicare hip must have lamed him
made it hard to run away again.
